A graduate of the Leningrad Special School for the Gifted and the Leningrad Conservatory, Misha Quint made his orchestral debut at the age of 13 after winning first prize at the Boccherini Competition in St. Petersburg (then Leningrad). He gained international recognition after receiving top prizes in both the International Competition in Prague and the Russian National Competition, and subsequently appeared with many major Russian orchestras such as the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, Leningrad State Orchestra, Orchestra of Classical and Contemporary Music as well as with the Symphony Orchestras of Latvia and Georgia.
As an active chamber musician and recitalist, he has performed at festivals throughout Russia, Latvia, Georgia, and Belorussia. Mr. Quint arrived in the United States in 1989. He made his New York debut in a critically acclaimed recital debut at the 92nd Street Y and his orchestral debut in Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. A frequent guest of the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, he has also played with the Metropolitan Symphony, the New York Chamber Orchestra, National Irish Symphony, New York Chamber Symphony and the London Soloists Chamber Orchestra at Queen Elizabeth Hall. He has given numerous concerts and master classes in England, Germany, Switzerland,Ireland and the US. Quint has performed under conductors Maxim Shostakovich, Paul Dunkel, Colman Pierce, Sydney Harth, Ravil Martinov, Camilla Kolchinsky, Yakov Bergman, and others.
Critics describe him as "a master of probing sentiment, shaded phrasing and flawless technique." Daniel Webster of the Philadelphia inquirer writes: "....[his] virtuosity provided a fresh voice..." and "the Russian school of string playing has taken on a different light with Quint." Quint's broadcasts include appearances on WQXR's "In the Listening Room" and live recitals on WGBH (Boston), WMNB (NJ), WNYC (NY).
As a leading proponent of contemporary music, he has performed and premiered works of American composers as well as renowned Russian composers such as Schnittke, Basner and Gubaidulina. Currently, Misha Quint is a Professor on the music faculties of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh (PA), the Lucy Moses School and Mannes College of Music in New York. He has been on the faculty of the International Institute of Music in Marktoberdorf, Germany, and was the music director and founder of the International Cello Festival in Blonay and Interharmony Music Festival in Geneva, Switzerland.
Mr. Quint currently is the founder and music director of the Sulzbach-Rosenberg International Music Festival in Bavaria, Germany and the Interharmony International Music Festival which features festivals in Hinterzarten/Schwarzwald, Germany, in Soesterberg, The Netherlands and in The Berkshires, USA. www.interharmony.com, www.srimf.com, www.mishaquint.com
